The London Borough of Kingston upon Thames is located Southwest of London City airport a distance of 21 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the A1011 and A24. It is located in southwest London and has a population of 160,400 according to 2011 statistics.
Kingston upon Thames has been considered an important settlement for many centuries and the Anglo-Saxons first recorded Kingston in a Charter in 838 and it became the coronation site for the seven Anglo-Saxon Kings with a memorial of this being the Coronation Stone that is situated outside of The Guildhall. After the Norman Conquest coronations were no longer held there with William the Conquerer being crowned at Westminster Abbey. By the 11th Century it had become an agricultural village raising crops, sheep for wool and fishing for salmon in the Thames. In 1481 it was declared a Royal Borough by Edward IV and market trade was increasted when Cardinal Wolsey built Hampton Court due to the numbers of staff employed at the Palace.
Some of the best places to visit in the borough include Hampton Court Palace and Gardens, Ham House, Kew Palace, Kingston Museum, boat trips over the Thames and walks and cycle routes are on offer to Hampton Court, Teddington and Richmond. There are plenty of parks and open spaces including Bushey Park, Home Park, Richmond Park and Kew Gardens.
